In August 1947, the British left India after nearly two centuries of colonial rule. The country was divided in two, and Pakistan was born. What followed was the largest migration in the history of the world. Over ten million people were displaced and over one million perished. This is the story of some that survived.

About Voices of Partition
Voices of Partition is a collaboration between Theatre Wallay, a theater company in Islamabad, Pakistan, and theater artists from the United States which focuses on the personal stories of survivors of the partition of India and Pakistan. "This Stained Dawn" ("Dagh Dagh Ujala") is an original theater piece resulting from the Voices of Partition Project based on interviews conducted by Theatre Wallay members of survivors of the 1947 partition. The project aims to preserve these stories before a generation of survivors is lost, and also to educate people in the U.S. about a world event that had, and continues to have, enormous ramifications.
