Johnson Center, A

Dr Erinn Gilson is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Florida, and author of The Ethics of Vulnerability: A Feminist Analysis of Social Life and Practice (Routledge 2014). In this talk, Dr Gilson will expand on her recent work on vulnerability and ignorance to discuss the issue of sexual violence:

“Although vulnerability to sexual violence is often understood as a given, the nature of this vulnerability and of attempts to mitigate it are not often critically examined. In this presentation, I discuss different ways we might thematize vulnerability in relation to sexual violence. I argue that a particular form of ignorance - willful ignorance of the nature of vulnerability - leads to failures to respond adequately to sexual violence and, indeed, makes possible its persistence.”
