This course introduces key concepts in the field of television studies, and analytical approaches to television as an art form. We will examine how industry practices, technological change, and geopolitics shape cultural imaginaries expressed in television from around the world. We will examine a range of contemporary genres and contexts, including but not limited to: Turkish dizis to K-dramas, US documentary mini-series to telenovela adaptations, and Scandinavian crime thrillers to queer historical dramas.

Learn how to situate and evaluate television in their cultural and historical contexts, interpret specific texts, and understand the relationships among broadcasting and networks, citizenship, audiences, and the public sphere.
